Plant Pharmaceutics: Healing Potential of Nature's Ingredients

Today's blog is to update you on the exciting news that we are going to be starting a series in which we'll explore the drugs provided by nature. In the words of any pharmacy student, we will lean more into pharmacognosy.

I sure am going to give you the insights on the topics that we are going to cover:
Flowers are the aesthetic beauties in nature designed by the creator for many different reasons. They can be used to symbolize/express emotions, relax one from negativity with their fragrance, and perform their medicinal actions for humanity.
Not all flowers are supposed to be medicinal which is why we must be careful and not randomly pick things in nature and put them in our mouths hoping for a good result. Following are some flowers that can be used as drugs.
  • English violet, Florist's violet
  • Pomegranate
  • China rose, Shoe flower
  • Sedge

2. MINERAL DRUGS:

Minerals are solid substances present in the form of ores. They are separated by using specific techniques. They are required by our body in trace amounts and perform multiple functions in our body. Among crude drugs, 85% are obtained from plant resources and 15% are obtained from animal resources and minerals. The mineral drugs we are going to cover are:
  • Alum
  • Sulphur
  • Borax

3. OIL DRUGS:

Oils are a sub-category of lipids and can be classified into fixed oils(natural oils) and volatile oils(essential oils). Some oil drugs are:
  • Sesame oil
  • Peanut oil, arachis oil
  • Coconut oil

4. EXTRACT DRUGS:

The drugs that are obtained through the extraction process are called extract drugs. Extraction is the process of isolating an active ingredient or active substance from raw material of either plants or animals or directly from natural sources with the help of solvent is called extraction Products of extraction are timed as extracts. Examples of extract drugs are:
  • Aloes
  • Catechu

5. EXUDATE DRUGS:

Exedate drugs are medications that are derived from natural exudates which are the fluids that ooze or flow out of a living organism. To obtain Exudates from plants like latex( rubber), resins or gums, and mucilages by incisions or cuts made on plant surface, injury to plants, pathological or physiological factors.
  • Thorny Bamboo, Bamboo manna 
  • Asafoetida
  • Benzoin, gum benzoin

6. POD DRUGS:

Pods are also called legumes and they are the roots of the Pea family. They contain various seeds that are present in specific arrangements. The pods that can be used as drugs are:
  • Drum stick tree, miracle plant
  • Golden shower senna, purging cassia
  • Screw tree

7. RHIZOME DRUGS:

The rhizomes are a type of plant stem modification. They are the underground creeping structures with lateral suits and adventurous roots they are the vegetative part of the plant and consist of nodes and internals Stop when you cut a part of the rhizome and sow it, a new plant arises.
The rhizome drugs that we will discuss are:
  • Java galangal 
  • Mango Ginger 
  • Ginger

8. ROOT DRUGS:

The root is the part of plants that usually grow underground and emerges from the radical mostly. An example is:
  • Kings dye, Alkenet root

9. BARK DRUGS:

The bark is the outermost covering of stems and old plants or woody plants, especially in trees. It is formed as a result of secondary growth in plants. The bark protects the plant from extreme temperatures, reduces the rate of evaporation, protects the tissue from dryness, provides mechanical support, and many more the most commonly used bark drug is:
  • Cinnamon bark
