PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS: Antispasmodic, carminative, expectorant, laxative, sedative, antitussive, abortifacient, antiepileptic, antidote for opium, anthelmintic
USES/INDICATIONS: Asafoetida is used for digestion problems including intestinal gas, upset stomach, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and irritable colon. It is also used in asthma, bronchitis, in whooping cough, "swine" flu, and asthma. Its application to the skin relieves corns and calluses. As fragrance in cosmetics and as a flavoring ingredient in foods and beverages. Sometimes used for nervous conditions, hysteria, insanity, convulsions, and as a nerve stimulant for ongoing mental and physical fatigue with depression (neurasthenia).
DOSAGE: 0.3-1g (powdered) 3 times a day
SIDE EFFECTS: Asafoetida can make your lips seem swollen. Burping, flatulence, diarrhea, headache, seizures, and blood disorders are its other side effects.

PART USED: Balsam resin obtained from incisions in the bark of several species of trees in the genus Styrax
CONSTITUENTS: Balsamic acid, cinnamic acid, benzoic acid
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS: Antiseptic, disinfectant, diuretic, carminative, absorbent, Gl stimulant, expectorant, aphrodisiac, antigout, antarthritic
USES/INDICATIONS: It is used to ease congestion caused by asthma and allergies. In the form of tincture and lotion, it is used on minor skin sores, skin ulcers, bedsores, cracked skin, and wounds as a protectant from irritation and infection. In combination with other herbs (aloe, storax, and tolu balsam), benzoin is used as a strong skin protectant, this combination is known as "compound benzoin tincture." It is also put in steam and is inhaled in laryngitis and bronchitis. In dentistry, swollen gums and herpes sores in the mouth are also treated with benzoin.
DOSAGE: 250mg -1g approx.
SIDE EFFECTS: People who are allergic to benzoin break out in a rash when they use it, it may cause skin sensitivity, contact dermatitis, and severe allergic reactions in hypersensitive individuals. Benzoin is poisonous if taken internally.

PART USED: Manna (a siliceous crystalline secretion found in the culms of female plants), Young leaves and shoots, Seeds, Roots
CONSTITUENTS: Silicic acid, Oxides of iron, Potash, Lime, Calcium.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS: Tonic, astringent, anthelmintic, refrigerant, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, anti-phlegmatic, expectorant, diuretic
USES/INDICATIONS: Manna is used in diseases of blood and chest complaints like tuberculosis, bronchitis, cough, and asthma. It nourishes the body, cleanses the urinary system due to the diuretic effect, and fastens the healing of wounds. Due to its astringent and desiccative effects, it stops bleeding from piles, diarrhea, dysentery, and steatorrhea. Also useful in palpitation and beneficial against threadworms.
DOSAGE: 1-3 gm
SIDE EFFECTS: Prolonged use may be harmful for people with cold temperaments; it may cause impotence and may affect an individual's lungs and stomach function.
