CONSTITUENTS: Anthraquinone glycosides (aloin, barbaloin), resins, gel, polysaccharide, salicylic acid, amino acids, essential oil
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS: Anti-inflammatory, laxative, purgative, vermifuge, emollient (fresh form), sunburn healer, antiseptic, antiviral, hair tonic, antidiabetic.
USES/INDICATIONS: It is used in chronic constipation with a carminative to prevent griping and the aloe vera juice is used to treat a variety of digestive disorders. It is dissolved in spirit and used as a hair dye to stimulate hair growth. Leaf mucilage is used as a poultice in inflammations. Both the translucent inner pulp and the resinous yellow aloin from wounding the Aloe plant are used externally to relieve skin discomforts. The gel found in the leaves is utilized for mitigating minor burns, wounds, and different skin conditions like dermatitis and ringworm.
The aloin it contains is a sunscreen that blocks 20-30% of the sun's ultraviolet rays. Aloe's natural pH is about 4.3, ideally suited for skin.
DOSAGE: 125-500 mg
SIDE EFFECTS: Excessive use encourages hemorrhoids and should not be taken internally during pregnancy and nursing.

PART USED: Extract of leaves and young twigs
CONSTITUENTS: 7.33 % catechins, catechu, tannic acid, iso quercetin and quercetin, polyphenols.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS: Astringent, styptic, indigestion, antidiabetic, anthelmintic, antidiarrheal, antidysentery, antibacterial, anti sciatica, anticancer, Anti-inflammatory
USES/INDICATIONS: Due to the appreciable amount of tannins it is topically used for the treatment of burns and wounds. Catechu is incorporated in mouthwashes and gargles and is used for gum disease (gingivitis), pain and swelling inside the mouth (stomatitis), sore throat, and mouth ulcers. It is also used in lumbago and sciatica. It is found that it fights against E. coli and salmonella species. Infusion of leaves is also used in diarrhea and dysentery. Catechu is used as a flavor enhancer in foods and beverages.
DOSAGE: 10 to 40 grains
PREPARATION: The leaves are first boiled in water to make gambier. The water is absorbed and it turns brownish in color. The leaves are then pressed mechanically. This squeezes and extracts the liquid. This liquid is then dried into a semi-solid paste and molded into cubes, which are dried in the sun.
SIDE EFFECTS: Catechu might lower blood pressure, causing fainting and other symptoms, in people who already have low blood pressure. It is contraindicated in people with liver diseases as it may worsen the condition.
